Michel Kalika, president of the Business Science Institute, describes an organisation he considers unique in the academic world because it focuses on a single programme, the Doctor of Business Administration. He recounts how a group of faculty members from several universities created the institution in 2012 and 2013 in response to a recurring request from executive education participants who, a few years after completing an MBA, wanted to go further and consider doctoral study. He explains that conventional doctoral programmes are designed to train young researchers heading for academic careers and that universities are often poorly equipped to answer demand from practising managers. The interview also covers the network organisation and support team built to serve international managers, and Kalika's view that the DBA market is at the same emergent stage the masters market reached a decade earlier.
