| 2026.08 - Newsletter n°136 - July-August 2026 (EN)ENThe July-August 2026 issue opens with the opinion piece co-signed with Professor Jean-Pierre Helfer, president of the Academic Steering Committee, entitled Doctoral pathways deserve better than confusion. It addresses the need to clarify doctoral pathways in management studies: DBA, Executive PhD and traditional PhD are increasingly blurred labels that open the door to programmes lacking rigour. The authors restate the international distinction between the PhD, which trains researchers, and the DBA, which enables practitioners to conceptualise their experience, and call for programmes to be evaluated by the French higher education evaluation authority HCERES. The issue also illustrates the international momentum of the institute: the first doctoral conference organised in partnership with ICD Business School brought together on 23 June more than forty participants from four continents around the theme of organisations in transition, while the opening of the first cohort of the Executive DBA in Health, Innovation, AI and Environment in Shanghai, delivered face to face, confirms the community's grounding in contemporary research issues. The issue follows the familiar structure of the monthly letter: the president's foreword, programme news, campus life and contributions from the community. It addresses doctoral managers, doctors and the professors of the network, as well as managers considering the doctoral programme. | |
| 2026.06 - Newsletter n°135 - May-June 2026 (EN)ENThe May-June 2026 issue reflects the momentum of internationalisation and knowledge dissemination that characterises the Business Science Institute. The announcement of the strategic partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University for the launch of a double DBA degree is a major illustration of this, strengthening the programme's international academic recognition while preserving its grounding in managerial practice. The contemporary transformation of organisations also remains central to the community's reflections: the doctoral conference organised with ICD Business School and devoted to organisations in transition reflects the commitment to creating spaces for dialogue between disciplines, fields of practice and approaches, in order to gain a deeper understanding of the changes under way and their implications for organisational actors. This momentum is also visible in the recognition of intellectual contributions to management, as demonstrated by the 2026 FNEGE label awarded to a number of books, several of them written by members of the faculty. Faculty and alumni research and editorial news complete the issue. The format combines institutional information, event reports and the promotion of work produced by members of the community. As every month, the edition closes with faculty publications, videos and a selection of news from management research. The issue follows the familiar structure of the monthly letter: the president's foreword, programme news, campus life and contributions from the community. | |
| 2026.06 - Impact & Knowledge n°11 - June 2026 (EN)ENEleventh issue of Impact & Knowledge, published in June 2026, which takes readers to the heart of a collective reflection on the approaches, methods and aims of research in management studies. The latest edition of the audiovisual journal dedicated to sharing research insights, enriched by contributions from many professors of the faculty and associate researchers of the institute, offers a wide-ranging and critical mapping of contemporary management: from clinically grounded approaches to geoculturally decentred perspectives, and from epistemological vigilance to reflection on the researcher's political responsibility, these essays invite readers to rethink the very foundations of academic engagement. Extending this reflection on the frameworks that shape action, the opinion pieces examine two major transformations: the first considers artificial intelligence and the reshaping of social dialogue across representation, negotiation and the redistribution of roles, while the second takes readers into the world of Chinese management, revealing a paradigmatic shift long obscured by Western orthodoxies. An Impact(s) article closes the issue. Like the other issues of this bimonthly letter, the edition gives the floor to faculty members and alumni in order to make their work accessible to practitioners. The publication pursues its aim of circulating research results directly useful to managers beyond the academic circle alone. Each contribution is signed by a professor, an associate researcher or a doctor of the institute, and extends research work carried out within the programme. | |
| 2026.04 - Newsletter n°134 - March-April 2026 (EN)ENThe March-April 2026 issue opens on the major contemporary transformations that lie at the heart of the institute's concerns, reshaping organisations, managerial practices and the ways in which knowledge is produced, and calling for renewed spaces for reflection and dialogue. This commitment takes concrete form in the announcement of the doctoral conference co-organised with ICD Business School and dedicated to organisations in transition. The edition also highlights the close connection between research and managerial practice through a range of formats for dissemination and knowledge sharing, with contributions exploring the transformation of managerial work, the impact of digital technologies, the challenges of academic integrity and the need to consider research impact beyond conventional metrics alone. Finally, the range of publications, research activities and initiatives undertaken by faculty members and alumni illustrates the vitality of an international academic community committed to research rooted in practice, responsive to societal challenges and clearly oriented towards impact. As every month, the edition closes with faculty publications, videos and a selection of news from management research. The issue follows the familiar structure of the monthly letter: the president's foreword, programme news, campus life and contributions from the community. It addresses doctoral managers, doctors and the professors of the network, as well as managers considering the doctoral programme. | |
| 2026.04 - Impact & Knowledge n°10 - April 2026 (EN)ENTenth issue of Impact & Knowledge, published in April 2026, which shines a light on the profound transformations reshaping both commercial practices and decision-making mechanisms at the heart of organisations. Jean-Éric Pelet and Basma Taieb explore the rise of live streaming commerce, showing how the shopping experience is being transformed by flow, drawing on attention, engagement and immediacy within increasingly immersive digital environments. Jean Koudjokoum Tchangai takes readers into the context of SME bank financing in Togo, revealing the extent to which decisions also depend on the interpretation of what is left unsaid, on informal signals and on relational dynamics that escape strictly rational models. Across these two analyses a common thread emerges: the growing importance of dimensions often overlooked by conventional approaches, such as lived experience, perceptions and implicit interactions, which both enrich and complicate our understanding of management phenomena. The contributions invite readers to move beyond a purely technical or instrumental reading of management in order to better integrate human, cultural and contextual factors. The publication pursues its aim of circulating research results directly useful to managers beyond the academic circle alone. Each contribution is signed by a professor, an associate researcher or a doctor of the institute, and extends research work carried out within the programme. | |
| 2026.02 - Newsletter n°133 - January-February 2026 (EN)ENThe January-February 2026 issue opens the year with a focus on the academic visibility and societal impact of the research carried out by the Business Science Institute. Strengthening the institute's international positioning is fully aligned with the momentum of its 2024-2028 strategy, which aims to increase global recognition of its work and that of its 232 alumni worldwide. The issue also highlights the vitality of research in management sciences more broadly and the growing recognition of the DBA in particular, notably through the inclusion of the DBA in the programme of the AIM 2026 conference and the creation of the very first award for the best DBA thesis in information systems. The scientific contributions of professors and alumni address themes as diverse as artificial intelligence, sustainability, diversity, supply chain management, international collaboration and identity at work, reflecting the major contemporary challenges facing management. The newsletter finally pays tribute to the commitment and achievements of the community, through book publications, academic distinctions, calls for papers and alumni initiatives. It addresses doctoral managers, doctors and the professors of the network, as well as managers considering the doctoral programme. The recurring sections, seminar agenda, admissions and press review, complete the picture. Links to videos and to the documentary resources made available to the doctoral community are also included. | |
| 2026.02 - Impact & Knowledge n°9 - February 2026 (EN)ENNinth issue of Impact & Knowledge, published in February 2026. At the start of the year, this edition invites readers to step back and reflect on the profound transformations reshaping management, organisations and professional practices. The three opinion pieces brought together each question, in their own way, the limits of dominant models and the need to rethink analytical frameworks: professional sport viewed as a magnifying mirror of contemporary managerial tensions, corporate failure prediction models confronted with their own blind spots, and the emergence of an Executive DBA bridging law and management. A common thread runs through them, namely that the growing complexity of situations calls for approaches that are more transversal, more critical and more firmly grounded in real-world practice. These contributions remind readers that management cannot be reduced to recipes, indicators or predictive models, however sophisticated, and emphasise the importance of judgement, interdisciplinarity and attention to context, as well as to the human, ethical and institutional dimensions that shape collective action. Like the other issues of this bimonthly letter, the edition gives the floor to faculty members and alumni in order to make their work accessible to practitioners. The publication pursues its aim of circulating research results directly useful to managers beyond the academic circle alone. | |
| 2025.12 - Newsletter n°132 - November-December 2025 (EN)ENThe November-December 2025 issue is dedicated to the graduation ceremony held in Lyon on 3 October in the presence of forty-six faculty members. During the event, the Business Science Institute awarded degrees to twenty-seven new doctors representing thirty different countries and conferred twenty-one Certificates of Research in Business Administration. Alongside numerous updates on the institute's activities and those of its faculty members and alumni, the newsletter shares good news about its communication channels: the YouTube channel has surpassed 2,100 subscribers, with a total of 20,300 views and 10,600 hours of viewing time to date. The president also extends warm congratulations to Professor Lars Meyer-Waarden, who joins the very select group of the world's top two per cent of scientists in the 2025 ranking published by Stanford University, a distinction recognising his research on customer relationships and his more recent work on AI ecosystems and smart technologies; the institute is proud to count him among its faculty. Faculty and alumni research and editorial news, along with communication updates, complete this autumn edition. Links to videos and to the documentary resources made available to the doctoral community are also included. The format combines institutional information, event reports and the promotion of work produced by members of the community. | |
| 2025.12 - Impact & Knowledge n°8 - December 2025 (EN)ENEighth issue of Impact & Knowledge, published in December 2025. As the year draws to a close, the editorial invites readers to reflect on the profound transformations under way, particularly those driven by the rise of artificial intelligence. Two contributions call for caution and reflection: the first examines how AI, beyond its extraordinary promises, may in fact be fuelling an economic bubble, while the second warns of the risks of a uniform, polished and standardised language. Together these perspectives remind readers that AI is not neutral, since it reshapes scientific, economic and cultural practices as well as ways of thinking, producing, writing and communicating; far from rejecting it, the objective is to embed it within a responsible and informed approach that respects diversity, depth and the human dimension. The two Impact(s) articles pursue this line of inquiry in different domains, responsible finance and public procurement, illustrating how rigour, ethics and analytical depth remain the foundation of any serious endeavour. The issue closes by encouraging readers to stay curious, demanding, critical and engaged. Each contribution is signed by a professor, an associate researcher or a doctor of the institute, and extends research work carried out within the programme. Like the other issues of this bimonthly letter, the edition gives the floor to faculty members and alumni in order to make their work accessible to practitioners. | |
| 2025.10 - Newsletter n°131 - September-October 2025 (EN)ENThe September-October 2025 issue highlights the FNEGE 2025 Doctoral Thesis Observatory, which reflects the strong momentum of DBAs: the Business Science Institute, in partnership with the iaelyon School of Management, takes first place with thirty-eight theses defended in 2024. The issue also features an important international development, with the signing on 25 August of a partnership agreement with the Faculty of Economics and Business at the American University of Science and Technology in Beirut, Lebanon; the new cohort will be coordinated by professors Antoine Harfouche and Michel Kalika. Finally, the edition illustrates the energy and commitment of the alumni community: in Switzerland, a new association has been created to showcase the expertise of doctors and doctoral candidates in supporting local businesses through training, seminars and applied projects, while other alumni share their career paths and distinctions, confirming the growing role of the DBA as a driver of academic, professional and societal impact. Faculty research and editorial news complete the issue. | |
| 2025.10 - Impact & Knowledge n°7 - October 2025 (EN)ENSeventh issue of Impact & Knowledge, published in October 2025 as a special issue on the DBA in Health, Innovation, AI and Environment. The editorial explains why the partnership with Université Paris-Saclay was formed, distinguishing two dimensions. On a personal level, Professor Jean-Philippe Denis has known the institute's DBA programme for a very long time, its values, its commitment to quality and international accreditations and its responsive, entrepreneurial way of working; he has supervised theses, sat on viva panels and led seminars, is highly regarded within the community and is convinced that the DBA is a vital bridge between academia and the world of practice. On a strategic level, Université Paris-Saclay brings new areas of focus through its research priorities in artificial intelligence, innovation, the environment and health, together with the academic expertise of its faculty. The partnership complements existing collaborations and forms part of a wider development strategy that includes new agreements with professional organisations. The issue then presents the Executive DBA Paris-Saclay programme itself and the themes it will address. The publication pursues its aim of circulating research results directly useful to managers beyond the academic circle alone. Each contribution is signed by a professor, an associate researcher or a doctor of the institute, and extends research work carried out within the programme. | |
| 2025.08 - Newsletter n°130 - July-August 2025 (EN)ENThe July-August 2025 issue is particularly rich in news. It announces the launch of two new DBA cohorts for the coming academic year: one focusing on four major societal areas, health, innovation, artificial intelligence and the environment, in collaboration with Université Paris-Saclay under the academic direction of Professor Jean-Philippe Denis, and another dedicated to insurance and banking in partnership with the IFPASS Group. The president pays tribute to Jean-Philippe Denis following the announcement of the end of the IQSOG programme, Open Window on Management, broadcast on Xerfi Canal. Among the many scientific contributions from faculty and alumni, the issue highlights the book Réinventer l'intégrité académique à l'ère de l'intelligence artificielle, edited by Michelle Bergadaà and Paulo Peixoto. Recalling that Harvard has recently revoked a Business School professor's position for manipulating data to support her conclusions, an unprecedented sanction for a faculty member, the editorial reaffirms the institute's long-standing commitment to combating academic plagiarism, before the usual sections on faculty and alumni news. The recurring sections, seminar agenda, admissions and press review, complete the picture. Links to videos and to the documentary resources made available to the doctoral community are also included. The format combines institutional information, event reports and the promotion of work produced by members of the community. | |
| 2025.08 - Impact & Knowledge n°6 - August 2025 (EN)ENSixth issue of Impact & Knowledge, published in August 2025, presenting reflections firmly embedded in today's societal and managerial challenges: flipped learning, intergenerational transmission, leadership resilience and public sector competitiveness. Two opinion pieces explore the role of children as agents of awareness in the fight against food waste, signed by Amélie Clauzel, Caroline Riché and Nathalie Guichard of IUT Sceaux at Paris-Saclay University and originally published by The Conversation France, and the enduring mechanisms of gender inequality in the workplace, viewed through the lens of gender stereotypes. The edition also includes two Impact(s) articles: the first examines how competitiveness can be specifically leveraged by public sector organisations, while the second features the voices of senior leaders from Australian universities whose insights offer valuable perspectives on managerial resilience in times of crisis. The issue illustrates the purpose of this bimonthly publication, which is to make research carried out by the faculty and alumni of the Business Science Institute accessible to a professional readership. The publication pursues its aim of circulating research results directly useful to managers beyond the academic circle alone. Each contribution is signed by a professor, an associate researcher or a doctor of the institute, and extends research work carried out within the programme. | |
| 2025.06 - Newsletter n°129 - May-June 2025 (EN)ENThe May-June 2025 issue looks back at the 4th International Spring Seminar, held online on 27 and 28 March, with three distinguished guest speakers, professors Sylvain Charlebois, Simon L. Dolan and Loïck Roche. Over the two days, eleven doctoral candidates presented their Certificate of Research in Business Administration and fifteen others defended their Executive Doctorate in Business Administration theses before panels of international professors, with alumni also on hand to share their insights and experiences. In other news, nine books authored by members of the faculty have been certified by the FNEGE, and the president warmly congratulates the authors. He underlines that this edition once again showcases the intellectual contributions of faculty members and alumni. The issue then describes the seminar in more detail, including the opening keynotes delivered simultaneously in French and English by Professor Sylvain Charlebois of Dalhousie University in Canada, a world-renowned expert in food distribution and policy, before faculty and alumni research and editorial news. The issue shows an institute combining online seminars, international juries and editorial recognition of its faculty's work within the same period. The format combines institutional information, event reports and the promotion of work produced by members of the community. As every month, the edition closes with faculty publications, videos and a selection of news from management research. | |
| 2025.06 - Impact & Knowledge n°5 - June 2025 (EN) (duplicate)ENDuplicate copy of the fifth issue of Impact & Knowledge, published in June 2025. The opinion pieces explore transforming models of education and knowledge production, evolving learning formats, the future of work and participatory approaches as enablers of collective intelligence, while an analysis of Apple's history offers a strategic perspective on innovation dynamics and periods of disruption. Two book reviews complete the line-up: the first puts the concept of the extended academic enterprise into perspective as a framework for developing innovative teaching practices, the second explores the role of trust as the foundation of sustainable management, informed by behavioural sciences and today's organisational challenges. The opening forum is signed by Pierre-Jean Benghozi, emeritus research director at CNRS and professor at the École Polytechnique, who argues that the DBA is more than an extension of the MBA: since the creation of MBAs at Harvard in 1908 and Stanford in 1925, it represents a new way of thinking about knowledge creation in management. This file is identical to the other June 2025 English copy. Each contribution is signed by a professor, an associate researcher or a doctor of the institute, and extends research work carried out within the programme. | |
| 2025.06 - Impact & Knowledge n°5 - June 2025 (EN)ENFifth issue of Impact & Knowledge, published in June 2025. The opinion pieces explore transforming models of education and knowledge production, evolving learning formats, the future of work and participatory approaches as enablers of collective intelligence, while an analysis of Apple's history rounds off the collection with a strategic perspective on innovation dynamics and periods of disruption. Two book reviews complete this already rich line-up: the first puts the concept of the extended academic enterprise into perspective as a framework for developing innovative teaching practices, and the second explores the role of trust as the foundation of sustainable management, informed by behavioural sciences and today's organisational challenges. The opening forum is signed by Pierre-Jean Benghozi, emeritus research director at CNRS and professor at the École Polytechnique and member of the faculty, who argues that the DBA is more than just an extension of the MBA: since the creation of MBAs at Harvard in 1908 and Stanford in 1925, it offers a new way of thinking about knowledge creation in management. The issue confirms the publication's purpose, which is to make research work readable for an audience of practitioners as well as academics. Like the other issues of this bimonthly letter, the edition gives the floor to faculty members and alumni in order to make their work accessible to practitioners. | |
| 2025.04 - Newsletter n°128 - March-April 2025 (EN)ENThe March-April 2025 issue is dominated by the publication of the DBA White Paper by the FNEGE, the national body supporting management education in France. The White Paper calls for concrete action: official recognition of the DBA as an applied doctorate, its registration at level 8 in the national directory of professional certifications, and the creation of a quality label under the aegis of the FNEGE. With this publication, the academic community and the institutions involved in the development of the DBA aim to reshape perceptions of the qualification and secure the recognition it deserves within the French higher education landscape. The president also informs readers that the institute has decided to withdraw from the social network X in order to concentrate on developing a network fully aligned with its mission and vision, and announces with pride that it has surpassed 12,000 subscribers on LinkedIn. He finally encourages the faculty to reflect on the place of artificial intelligence in research topics, examining how far existing models remain applicable or are called into question. Faculty and alumni news complete the edition. The edition thus combines an institutional battle for recognition with practical decisions about the institute's own communication channels and research agenda. The format combines institutional information, event reports and the promotion of work produced by members of the community. | |
| 2025.04 - Impact & Knowledge n°4 - April 2025 (EN)ENFourth issue of Impact & Knowledge, published in April 2025 and following on from the White Paper on the DBA, which aims to achieve institutional recognition for the degree. This edition is mainly devoted to the advantages of the doctorate for managers, with three articles by eminent professors exploring how the DBA can help managers become more resilient in the face of contemporary challenges, how it adds value to managerial experience, and why the concept of the extended academic enterprise, as embodied by the Business Science Institute, represents a future model for creating both professional and scientific value. The issue also includes a strategic analysis of the impact of geopolitical dynamics on the agri-food sector and two contributions examining digital transformation in Africa and its role in fostering economic resilience. The opening forum, signed by Professor Yves Pigneur of the University of Lausanne and Doctor Honoris Causa of the institute, argues that becoming an invincible manager in today's business world requires a combination of strategic skills, innovation and interdisciplinary thinking, which the doctoral journey helps to develop. The issue therefore combines advocacy for the degree with concrete illustrations of how doctoral work feeds into strategic and geopolitical analysis. Like the other issues of this bimonthly letter, the edition gives the floor to faculty members and alumni in order to make their work accessible to practitioners. | |
| 2025.02 - Newsletter n°127 - January-February 2025 (EN)ENThe January-February 2025 issue announces that 2025 marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Business Science Institute, which joins the Groupe IGENSIA Education. The decision to partner with a leading group in the education sector stems from the commitment to securing the long-term future of the networked institution, of the DBA programme and of the distinctive nature of its business model, in alignment with the requirements of accreditation bodies. The IGENSIA Education Group was chosen because it shares the same not-for-profit association structure and offers significant opportunities for the continued development of the programme. Founded in 1975, the group is a key player in higher education and training, covering five core business areas, with more than two hundred programmes from undergraduate to postgraduate level, ten schools across four campuses in France, ten thousand partner companies and eighty thousand alumni. Through this partnership the institute retains its operational autonomy, including its partners, team, organisational structure, information system, network of professors and commitment to responsiveness. Faculty and alumni news complete the issue. This issue marks one of the most important structural changes in the institute's history, presented as a way of guaranteeing continuity rather than as a loss of independence. The issue follows the familiar structure of the monthly letter: the president's foreword, programme news, campus life and contributions from the community. | |
| 2025.02 - Impact & Knowledge n°3 - February 2025 (EN)ENThird issue of Impact & Knowledge, published in February 2025 and largely dedicated to the White Paper on the Doctorate of Business Administration published by FNEGE, a project the president had the honour of initiating and the pleasure of coordinating alongside Professor Jean-Pierre Helfer. With contributions from twelve DBA-granting institutions, including the Business Science Institute, the publication serves three key objectives: raising awareness of the DBA, securing its recognition and providing strategic recommendations. Readers discover the impact of the institute's DBA and the profiles of two doctors featured in the publication. The issue concludes with an Impact(s) article presenting the research findings of Doctor Aubin Mwansa Museka, whose thesis, defended in 2024 under the supervision of Professor Emmanuel Kamdem, explores doing business in a crisis and hostile environment through a cross-section of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Guinea. The White Paper section itself argues for management research carried out for the benefit of companies in an era of multiple transitions. The issue thus links an institutional advocacy document with concrete illustrations drawn from recent theses, showing how the White Paper's arguments translate into individual trajectories. Each contribution is signed by a professor, an associate researcher or a doctor of the institute, and extends research work carried out within the programme. | |
| 2024.11 - Newsletter n°126 - October-November 2024 (EN)ENThe October-November 2024 issue reviews the autumn International Week, held from 24 to 27 September at the iaelyon School of Management of Université Jean Moulin. The event featured twenty-two Executive DBA thesis defences, nineteen doctoral students completing the Certificate of Research in Business Administration and three managerial impact awards. Attendees took part in workshops, in discussions between faculty members and doctoral students, and in presentations from alumni, and the week culminated in the awarding of the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to two distinguished individuals. It brought together around sixty doctoral student-managers from thirty different countries, some thirty alumni and more than seventy faculty members. The president describes three intense and enriching days and considers that the success of the doctoral student-managers, together with the influence of alumni and faculty, demonstrates the relevance of the institute's initiatives and the impact it continues to generate. The issue then presents the three managerial impact prize winners, the DBA Impact(s) webinars and faculty scientific and editorial news. Held for the first time on the Lyon campus, the week also confirmed the shift of the institute's flagship event from Luxembourg towards its French academic partner. It addresses doctoral managers, doctors and the professors of the network, as well as managers considering the doctoral programme. | |
| 2024.10 - Impact & Knowledge n°1 - October 2024 (EN)ENFirst issue of Impact & Knowledge, published in October 2024, a new bimonthly newsletter dedicated entirely to the research contributions of the institute's alumni and faculty. In the editorial, the president recalls that since its inception the Business Science Institute has aimed to develop a new generation of theses: the Executive DBA it offers is more than a programme for managers seeking career advancement, since the theses produced are conceptually grounded and have both managerial and societal impact, made possible by the support of a faculty of 170 highly qualified academic researchers with international experience and a wide range of research interests. The issue then opens the faculty members' forum with a contribution by Jean-Eric Pelet, associate professor at IAE Amiens School of Management, on overcoming barriers to efficient online wine sensory evaluation, a text that links the France-China partnership consolidated during President Xi Jinping's state visit to France with the growing importance of international cooperation in higher education. A research meeting, a book review, an alumni forum and an Impact(s) article complete this first edition. The launch of this publication marks a shift in the institute's communication, from reporting on events towards making the substance of its research visible to a wider professional and academic audience. | |
| 2024.09 - Newsletter n°125 - August-September 2024 (EN)ENThe August-September 2024 issue announces a new academic year marked by International Week, held from 25 to 27 September at the iaelyon School of Management, with the presentation of nineteen Certificates of Research in Business Administration, twenty-two thesis defences and the participation of eighty-four professors of the institute. The president also announces a new format of webinars, DBA Impact(s), based on interviews with doctors who will present the impact of their Executive DBA thesis and explain the choice of their topic and the methodology used to complete their research. Finally, from October onwards, a new bimonthly newsletter called Impact and Knowledge will be devoted entirely to content featuring impact, with original productions by faculty members and alumni. The issue then details the key figures and highlights of the international week, including the inaugural talk by Jérôme Chabanne-Rive of iaelyon on how to navigate global societal challenges in a time of polycrisis while fostering responsible management, before turning to faculty, alumni and doctoral student news. This back-to-school issue shows an institute structuring its communication around three complementary channels: the monthly newsletter, the webinars devoted to impact and the new bimonthly publication dedicated to research content. The format combines institutional information, event reports and the promotion of work produced by members of the community. | |
| 2024.07 - Newsletter n°124 - June-July 2024 (EN)ENThe June-July 2024 issue highlights the partnership signed with the French national council of chartered accountants to deliver a DBA in Accountancy. This new partnership adds a bridge between the worlds of practice and academia for chartered accountants, marking that profession as a pioneer in leveraging the synergy between practitioners and academics at doctoral level. The president also welcomes the publication of the thesis results of two doctors of the institute, Stephan Meyer and Stéphane Royer, and appreciates the many contributions, articles, videos and interviews of the alumni, who continue to make a positive impact on the world of business through the results of the research carried out during their DBA. In keeping with technological advances and current debates around artificial intelligence, the institute actively participated in the third IRAFPA international research colloquium on academic integrity, devoted to the challenges and uncertainties of academic integrity in the age of artificial intelligence. The issue continues with news from faculty members, alumni and doctoral students. The issue illustrates the professional anchoring of the programme, with a structuring sector partnership and constant attention paid to academic integrity. It also marks the entry of a regulated profession into the field of the professional doctorate, with the methodological questions that this raises. | |
| 2024.05 - Newsletter n°123 - April-May 2024 (EN)ENThe April-May 2024 issue answers the most frequently asked questions about the DBA. On the difference between a PhD and a DBA, the president quotes EQUAL, the federation of international accreditation bodies and some twenty academic management associations: these are two doctoral programmes with distinct objectives, the PhD preparing full-time academics, typically early-career researchers, and the DBA addressing experienced managers who want to step back from their practice, capitalise on their experience, publish or teach part time; EQUAL also specifies that a DBA lasts four years, as required by AMBA. On how to choose a programme, the answer is that a DBA rests on doctoral supervision by professors with extensive hands-on experience of supervising theses, which is why the institute relies on a network of more than 150 such professors and pays particular attention to the quality of supervision and to responsiveness. The issue also announces the retirement of Caroline, who had worked at the institute since its inception, and covers the EDBAC 2024 conference, the FNEGE book awards and faculty news. These answers form a short guide for managers hesitating between doctoral routes, grounded in the institute's own practice. The issue also marks a change of generation within the support team after more than a decade of continuous service. | |
| 2024.03 - Newsletter n°122 - February-March 2024 (EN)ENThe February-March 2024 issue reports that the strengthening and development of the institute announced in the previous editorial is under way, with the opening of three new cohorts: Paris in a face-to-face format, the DBA in Sustainable Innovation Management run online with ICN Business School, and a new cohort in Dakar combining face-to-face and online formats. Professor Pierre-Jean Benghozi has been appointed administrator, responsible for ensuring the continuity of the programme should the president be unable to act. The president reaffirms his conviction that the DBA is poised to transform management research. A section details the renewal, for a further three years, of the international AMBA accreditation: created in 1967, the label applies only to doctorates in business administration, MBAs and masters in business and management, assesses programmes against precise quality assurance and governance criteria, and is granted to only the top two per cent of business schools worldwide. The issue continues with faculty scientific and editorial news, campus life and alumni updates. Together, these announcements combine growth in the number of cohorts, consolidation of governance and confirmation of the programme's international quality label. The issue also reflects an institution preparing its succession and its governance as carefully as its academic development. Links to videos and to the documentary resources made available to the doctoral community are also included. | |

| 2023.06 - Newsletter n°116 - June 2023 (EN)ENThe June 2023 issue extends the reflection on impact through the trajectory of one graduate, Doctor Cédric Baudet, from the first Geneva cohort. Right from the beginning of his DBA journey, he approached members of the faculty because of shared interests in methodological areas of research; discussions ensued, sometimes leading to friendships based on a common interest in a geographical region or even in food, and the first publications followed, then others. Today this graduate has come a long way: from doctoral student to doctor, he has become president of the alumni association DBA Saper & Praxis and an associate researcher; holder of a second, more traditional PhD thesis and thesis director in his own institution, he is now a full member of the faculty and continues to publish with his first mentors. The president draws a conclusion from this: whether it concerns doctoral candidates, doctors or faculty members, the impact of an Executive DBA thesis can be measured at any moment. The issue then presents the new Insight Into Research series and gathers news from the faculty, the doctors and the Executive DBA students. This portrait shows how a doctoral journey can extend into associative commitment, teaching and joint publications with former supervisors. The format combines institutional information, event reports and the promotion of work produced by members of the community. | |
| 2023.05 - Newsletter n°115 - May 2023 (EN)ENThe May 2023 issue opens with an editorial on managerial impact, described as part of the DNA of Executive DBA theses and as what distinguishes them from traditional PhDs. Since its creation, the institute has never stopped emphasising this key difference and highlighting the value of the results produced by its 140 doctors of business administration. Whether through the book Managers Creating Knowledge published by EMS in 2015, the many publications resulting from the theses, articles, opinion pieces or interviews, the managerial impact generated by this research continues to gain recognition. The French-speaking Human Resources Management Association has recently inaugurated a new AGRH-DBA thesis prize, and the institute proudly announces that it has been awarded to one of its alumni, Laurence Leung Tack, from the fifth Geneva cohort, who defended in 2022 a thesis on managing the aftermath of managerial burnout, analysing the logics of inter-hierarchical support and the contributions of mindfulness, supervised by Professor Marc Valax. The president congratulates her on a recognition that confirms the relevance of the programme. The issue continues with videos, faculty scientific and editorial news, campus life and alumni updates. The prize gives concrete form to peer recognition of work carried out by practising managers on questions arising directly from their professional experience. | |
| 2023.04 - Newsletter n°114 - April 2023 (EN)ENThe April 2023 issue reflects a particularly rich month. The thirty videos shot by faculty members during the international seminar at the Trianon Palace in Versailles on 1 October 2022 are now all available online. March ended with the second spring seminar, held remotely on 30 and 31 March in the presence of twenty-four faculty members and four DBA graduates sitting on the examination panels. The programme included three conferences in French and English on academic integrity and artificial intelligence, which for the first time attracted as many professors as doctoral students; nine candidates presented their Certificate of Research in Business Administration and four defended their thesis, bringing the number of doctors in business administration of the institute to 137. Finally, the FNEGE certification board, which distinguishes publications grounded in and contributing to management research, certified eight books written by members of the faculty. The issue continues with videos of the spring seminar, the 2023 FNEGE certifications, faculty scientific and editorial news, campus life and alumni updates. Taken together, these items show a programme whose visibility now rests as much on published books as on the defences themselves. The edition thus combines events, defences and recognition of published work within a single month. As every month, the edition closes with faculty publications, videos and a selection of news from management research. | |
| 2023.03 - Newsletter n°113 - March 2023 (EN)ENThe March 2023 issue continues the reflection on academic integrity opened the previous month, this time focusing on ChatGPT. The president recounts how Aline, preparing the March edition, suggested going further on the subject and asked whether he should answer the questions everyone raises: is ChatGPT a danger for doctoral programmes, does it create a plagiarism problem for DBA thesis writing? Her answer was the opposite: why not acknowledge the benefits, when no one today would question the contribution of the internet and the time and efficiency it saves researchers? AI has long been part of daily life, and this is simply a new stage; with ChatGPT, soon followed by others such as Google's Bard, then in test phase, gains in productivity, access to sources and data analysis can be further optimised, even if the risk of inappropriate use remains. The exchange ends by giving the floor to ChatGPT itself, interviewed by Aline on language processing. The issue continues with the arrival of a new member of the support team, Impact & Knowledge, faculty news, campus life and alumni updates. The exchange gives an unusually balanced view of a debate that was polarising academia at the time. The president closes by reminding readers that tools change but responsibility for the work remains with the author. | |
| 2023.02 - Newsletter n°112 - February 2023 (EN)ENThe February 2023 issue is centred on academic integrity, described as a major challenge for an institution running an Executive DBA programme for senior managers and, more generally, as a strategic issue for candidates and institutions alike. It will therefore be at the heart of the discussions at the spring seminar held on 30 and 31 March and 1 April. The president insists that academic integrity is not limited to plagiarism: its scope is much broader and also concerns the literature review, the conditions under which information is collected, its processing, the formulation of conclusions and the resulting publications. The subject is all the more topical since the appearance at the end of the previous year of ChatGPT, the AI-based conversational agent, which has prompted numerous reactions and reports, from misuse by students to fears for the future of teaching or, conversely, enthusiasm in the name of educational innovation. The debate remains open, but the essential point stands: the Executive DBA thesis is and can only be the result of the individual work of the doctoral candidate. The issue continues with support for Ukraine, Impact & Knowledge, faculty news and campus life. The editorial thus links a technological debate to a very concrete rule of the doctoral process at the institute. | |
| 2023.01 - Newsletter n°111 - January 2023 (EN)ENThe January 2023 issue opens with the president's thanks and wishes. He thanks the 237 doctoral candidates and 133 alumni from some fifty countries for their trust, the faculty for their involvement and responsiveness in supporting candidates, since without professors there can be no doctoral programme, and the network team fully committed to a DBA project accessible to managers in three languages. For 2023 he wishes above all for peace in Ukraine, a country the institute continues to support in its own modest way. The coming months will see continued development to allow new managers to pursue a DBA thesis and generate managerial impact, through several projects consistent with the institute's quality and accreditation objectives: the opening of a Spanish-language group led by professors Sébastien Liarte and Marc Valax, the creation of a Real Estate stream together with the Observatory of Real Estate Strategies entrusted to Doctor Sébastien Bourbon, and the creation of a Public Management stream led by professors Alain Burlaud and Madina Rival. The issue then presents the 2022 activity report, videos, Impact & Knowledge, faculty news, campus life and alumni updates. These announcements outline a year of thematic diversification, with specialised streams added to the existing geographical footprint. As every month, the edition closes with faculty publications, videos and a selection of news from management research. | |

The president is also proud to announce a new partnership with Sphinx for the Paris 8 group, which will begin in March 2023, and gives readers an appointment in January for a year already full of events. The issue then presents the Impact & Knowledge platform, faculty scientific and editorial news, campus life and alumni updates, giving the picture of an institution that combines the routine of its doctoral seminars with a clear political and civic stance, and prepares its next partnerships while maintaining a steady rhythm of programme openings across several continents. It also shows an institute that keeps its programme calendar running while taking public positions on the events of the time.

| 2022.09 - Newsletter n°107 - September 2022 (EN)ENThe September 2022 issue announces several highlights in the life of the institute. The 8th international seminar will take place in central Paris on 29 and 30 September, then in Versailles at the Trianon Palace for the first Strategic Meetings and the graduation ceremony on 1 October. True to its vocation of enabling managers to create knowledge and impact useful to companies through its DBA programme, the institute organises these Strategic Meetings in partnership with Antidox, IQSOG, the Encyclopédie de la Stratégie, Choiseul Advisory and the École de Paris du Management. September also marks the tenth anniversary of the institute's website, created by Samuel, whose unfailing commitment is warmly acknowledged. Finally, the institute continues its development with plans to open new groups in French, English and German, including one specialised in Sustainable Innovation Management in partnership with ICN Business School. The issue then details the programme of the international seminar and the Strategic Meetings, before presenting Impact & Knowledge, faculty scientific and editorial news, campus life and alumni updates. Links to videos and to the documentary resources made available to the doctoral community are also included. | |
| 2022.07 - Newsletter n°106 - July 2022 (EN)ENThe July 2022 issue announces, after two online editions imposed by the health crisis, the return of face-to-face meetings: the 8th International Seminar will be held in Paris before a return to Luxembourg to celebrate the institute's tenth anniversary in 2023. The president mentions the interviews currently being conducted on how the DBA has impacted alumni, one key point being that the institute gives its doctoral candidates the opportunity to interact with a large number of internationally renowned professors. Beyond the shared pleasure of meeting again, the seminar will therefore be an opportunity to congratulate the new graduates, to pay tribute to the alumni doctors who are creating impact and to inaugurate the New Strategic Future Meetings. The provisional programme is published: from 29 September to 1 October, with an opening conference, Certificate of Research in Business Administration oral presentations and meetings at the Espace Vinci in the Bourse district of Paris, followed by the day at the Trianon Palace in Versailles. The issue also announces the memorandum of understanding signed with the Ukrainian Catholic University, and continues with Impact & Knowledge, faculty news and campus life. The issue shows how the institute prepares, from the summer onwards, an event that has become central to the life of its community. | |
| 2022.06 - Newsletter n°105 - June 2022 (EN)ENThe June 2022 issue opens with a foreword asking whether the institute's strategy is emergent or deliberate. Recalling that all his MBA and DBA students have heard him quote Mintzberg on this distinction, the president admits, at the risk of being out of sync with management textbooks, that the strategy of the Business Science Institute is rather emergent and opportunity-driven, even though its mission statement and strategic ambition remain unchanged. Making the DBA accessible to managers internationally has always been the mission, and becoming a key player in a growing market the vision. Beyond that, development has been driven by opportunities generated through contact with what he considers the crucial link in a doctoral programme, namely the professors: the German-language format and the openings in Shanghai, Bangkok, Dakar, Geneva, Douala and Bamako illustrate an emergent strategy, whereas the development, long before COVID, of distance learning and English-language formats reflects a deliberate one. He concedes that his colleagues in strategy will point out that an opportunity can only be seized if it is aligned with a strategic intention. The issue continues with the Impact & Knowledge platform, faculty scientific and editorial news, campus life and alumni updates. The reflection is offered as a case study in itself, showing how a networked academic organisation grows through the professors who join it. | |
| 2022.05 - Newsletter n°104 - May 2022 (EN)ENThe May 2022 issue opens with the president's foreword, written a decade after the creation of the institute and in the wake of the first Impact seminar held in Paris in March with 130 participants. Several new features are being put in place in what he describes as a return to the institute's roots: the institutional website has been completely redesigned, a new site called Impact & Knowledge by Business Science Institute has been launched to highlight and promote the impactful contributions of faculty members, and, in keeping with its commitment to interaction between academia and practice, the institute has become a founding partner of the Rencontres Stratégiques, the New Strategic Futures Meetings, organised with Choiseul Advisory and IQSOG and built on an editorial partnership with the Encyclopédie de la Stratégie at EMS editions and the Ecole de Paris du Management. With these initiatives the institute is proud to contribute directly to the collective valorisation and impact of scientific production in management sciences. The issue then presents the Impact & Knowledge platform, faculty scientific and editorial news, campus life and alumni updates. This issue marks a communication turning point, with two platforms launched at the same time to make the community's work visible internationally. The format combines institutional information, event reports and the promotion of work produced by members of the community. | |
| 2022.04 - Newsletter n°103 - April 2022 (EN)ENThe April 2022 issue opens with a foreword on the first Impact Seminar, where some sixty professors took part in workshops reviewing the institute's strategy and activities, alongside nine thesis defences and a series of supervisory seminars. Over the three days, the results of the communication audit carried out by Professor Jean-Philippe Denis were presented, the organisation of the next international week was outlined and the principle of recurring events was agreed: the Certificate of Research and DBA thesis defences from 27 to 30 September 2022 in central Paris, then on 1 October the graduation ceremony, impact meetings with alumni and the launch of the strategic meetings at the Trianon Palace in Versailles, a date readers are invited to save. The president also directs readers to the XERFI Canal videos gathered in the media section of the new website. A full report on the Impact Seminar, held from 10 to 12 March at the Espace Vinci and online, describes the enthusiasm of participants finally able to meet again after two years of working remotely, and the issue closes with the institute's collection, faculty news and campus life. The foreword insists on the value of gathering the faculty around a shared strategic exercise rather than around defences alone. | |
| 2022.03 - Newsletter n°102 - March 2022 (EN)ENThe March 2022 issue presents the first Impact Seminar, organised on 10, 11 and 12 March in the presence of faculty members, graduates and doctoral candidates, in person at the Espace Vinci in Paris on the first two days and remotely on the third. The programme is published in detail: on Thursday, a welcome and the annual activity report by Michel Kalika, a session on accreditations by Stephen Platt, the presentation of the impact workshops by Jean-Pierre Helfer, the workshops themselves, a plenary feedback session, an impact conference by Professor Jean-Philippe Denis on what he has learnt, the presentation of books published in honour of professors Kamdem and Moscarola, and a faculty dinner. Friday brings together faculty, students and alumni, while Saturday is devoted to online impact webinars. This first seminar marks the return of physical meetings after two years of restrictions and sets the pattern for the recurring events adopted afterwards. As every month, the edition closes with faculty publications, videos and a selection of news from management research. | |
| 2022.02 - Newsletter n°101 - February 2022 (EN)ENThe February 2022 issue is devoted to the 2021 activity report, which shows what an eventful year it was. Produced under the guidance of Professor Michel Kalika as director of publication, with Hugo, the community manager, as editor entrusted with the difficult task of compiling and consolidating all the data, and Sylvain Stanik as graphic designer, the 53-page document gives ample space to the genesis and history of the institute. It allows readers not only to appreciate the diversity of the institution and the quality of its Executive DBA programme, but also to measure its impact. After the report was circulated to the community, many messages were sent to the president, several of which are quoted: readers describe an amazing and impressive report, congratulate the whole team and its founder, presented as professor, researcher, entrepreneur and manager, and salute the dedication reflected in the document. The issue continues with DBA Impact(s), the interview of the month, alumni news, January highlights, publications, media coverage, videos, admissions and news from management research. The report is also presented as a communication tool towards partners, accreditation bodies and future candidates, well beyond the internal community. It also serves as a reference document for the accreditation processes under way at that time. | |
| 2022.01 - Newsletter n°100 - January 2022 (EN) (duplicate)ENDuplicate copy of the January 2022 issue, which celebrates the anniversary of the institute's monthly newsletter. The text recalls the initial determination of the president, Professor Michel Kalika, to create an information channel allowing members of the community, doctoral students, alumni and faculty members, as well as potential future students, to follow the institution's news and the diverse academic life of its staff. Over the years the newsletter has improved in content, with new sections such as the interview of the month and the pages devoted to alumni, and in design, with more interactive links to videos and web content. A visual sequence looks back at the seven graduation ceremonies, from 2015 to 2021, that have marked its evolution. The interview of the month is given by Michel Kalika himself, who says he is doing very well, still thoroughly enjoying his work, and describes an institute that continues to grow and progress. The issue also includes a professional development course, alumni news, the agenda, December highlights, publications, media coverage, videos, admissions and news from management research. This copy is kept as a duplicate of the January 2022 edition, its content being identical to the other file exported from the newsletter archive. The issue follows the familiar structure of the monthly letter: the president's foreword, programme news, campus life and contributions from the community. | |
| 2022.01 - Newsletter n°100 - January 2022 (EN)ENThe January 2022 issue celebrates the anniversary of the institute's monthly newsletter, which reflects the initial determination of its president, Professor Michel Kalika, to create an information channel allowing members of the community, doctoral students, alumni and faculty members, as well as prospective students, to follow the institution's news and the rich academic life of its contributors. Over the years the newsletter has grown in substance, with new sections such as the interview of the month and the pages devoted to alumni, and in form, with more interactive links to videos and web content. A photographic sequence looks back at the seven graduation ceremonies from 2015 to 2021 that have punctuated its history. The interview of the month is given by Michel Kalika himself, who reports that he is doing very well on all counts, still thoroughly enjoying his work, and describes an institute that keeps growing and progressing. The issue also presents a professional development course, alumni news, the agenda, December highlights, publications, media coverage, videos, admissions and news from management research, offering a snapshot of an institution that has turned a simple mailing into a genuine archive of its own history. It closes by underlining how much this monthly appointment has become a shared thread for a community spread across dozens of countries. | |
| 2021.12 - Newsletter n°99 - December 2021 (EN)ENThe December 2021 issue publishes the satisfaction survey carried out after the International Week held from 27 to 30 September. Conducted with SPHINX software, it was sent to the whole community: 96 faculty members, 202 doctoral students, 80 alumni and 8 members of the management team, and covered satisfaction with the programme, the graduation ceremony, interaction with faculty members and doctoral students, and the general organisation. Of the 386 people surveyed, 117 responded partially or fully, and of those, 80 gave an overall assessment: 34 were very satisfied, 22 satisfied, 10 not satisfied, 7 not satisfied at all and 7 did not comment. The comments show that while the quality of the organisation and of the programme were praised, negative feedback mainly concerned the interpersonal dimension that the event lacked, as in 2020, because of the constraints of the online format. The issue continues with the interview of the month, the Certificate of Research in Business Administration, a professional development course, alumni and doctoral student news, the agenda, November highlights, a publication, DBA Impact(s), media coverage, videos and admissions. The survey is presented transparently, including the critical comments, and serves as a basis for preparing a return to face-to-face meetings the following year. The format combines institutional information, event reports and the promotion of work produced by members of the community. | |
